One
of the first castles built from stone in 1066-1072, Chepstow
commands a rocky bluff above a bend in the River Wye. Chepstow's
strategic location in the Southern border Marches between
England and Wales was crucial to the owner's military forays
against the Welsh. Indeed, all subsequent owners of Chepstow
were powerful noble families. Construction at Chepstow continued
in stages up through the 16th century with possible additions
in the 17th, providing today's viewers with an historical
overview of castle building.
