The
big event during Spring in Washington, DC, is the Cherry Blossom
Festival designed to coincide with the blooming of several
thousand Cherry trees around the Jefferson Memorial Tidal
Basin. Given to Washington by the mayor of Tokyo in 1912,
the trees number over 6,000 with 12 varieties. The blossoms
peak anytime between mid March and mid April posing uncertainty
to Festival planners. Some years it snows on the blossoms,
freezing out all but the dedicated viewers, other years are
wet and dreary. The best years peak in full sunshine, luring
a crush of families, lovers, cyclists, dog walkers, office
workers, baby carriages, painters, photographers, and tourists
all looking up at pink heaven in the trees.
