The
goal of the Fall Leaves series was to push the image beyond
a regular photograph using only the controls of the camera.
Melissa found that throwing the lens out of focus created
interference lines of double or triple images, giving texture
to the final photograph. Melissa packed as much color into
the frame as possible while the selective focus produced shapes
of anthropomorphic creatures. The subject matter provided
infinite planes of focus when looking up through the trees
and a turn of the lens could manipulate the result into two
completely different images. Sunshine provided selective highlights
and a transmitted glow as it passed through the leaves. The
finished image looks more like a painting than a photograph
and glistens like a tiny jewel.
