The View From The Studio
We woke before sunrise on November 28, 2022 to find that we had been invited to the newest show in town — The Eruption Of Mauna Loa. And what a show it was! After 38 years of slumber, Pele had returned to the Mountain.
The view from the studio never ceases to amaze!
In 2018 we lived through the spectacular eruption of Kilauea. It was the most significant eruption of Kilauea in over 200 years. The eruption brought about many changes, including the fiery destruction of our home of 20 years.
It was time to turn the page and move ahead… to Chapter 2. And in no time we found ourselves in a new home in Waimea, far from the lava hazard zones, and looking out across the Waimea Plain to Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai.
We settled in to our new life and counted our blessings. I set up the easel in an upstairs room and started to get back to the work that had been delayed by the eruption. And whenever I took a break I found myself looking out at The View From The Studio.
The view across the plain is hard to describe in words - it is vast, humbling, strikingly beautiful and ever changing. The days and nights, the months, the seasons pass like moods painted from an infinite palette. One day you’re looking at snow and ice, the next you’re watching Mars rise out of the eastern flank of Mauna Kea. And now, after 4 years of living here, we are again looking at lava.
At some point in those early days I realized that all I had to do was sit at the window, watch and wait. The pictures would present themselves. And how they have!
